Whenever I walk around the University area, I meet men and
women in green. You could wonder what their work is, somehow they look like
policemen.
The first people to encounter when I came to Moi on my first
visit were these guys in green. At first I thought they are policemen so I kept
a distance due to believe I have on policemen. Normally, people hate
associating with policemen and it is natural to fear them. Whenever you pass by
their side you feel like they could arrest you even if you haven’t done
anything worth to be detained. I thought the men in green at the administration
block were policemen but to my surprise they didn’t carry their guns so I felt
at ease to walk. I knew they were in peace and not in a position to shoot if
you distract them. The worst thing I fear on earth is a gun short.
Moi university students believe that these beings in green
don’t do their work to the maximum. They only patrol one area talking without any
signs of alertness. They view them as uneducated who don’t understand anything
about security and never went to school. At times students refer them as
‘Kamaliza’ a name that shows clearly how they under rate them. Students claim
that while the security men are there, they still lose their belongings through
theft which is being conducted day and night. They wonder how these thieves
manage to go away with their valuables without the knowledge of the security
men.
The most stolen items within the campus surrounding are the
electronics. Laptops, Mobile phones, iron boxes, music system and many other
electronic devices are the most reported valuables belonging to students. The
most stolen university property are the mattresses, may be that could be the
reason why the university has decided to buy two inch mattresses instead of the
six inch they normally buy. Students’ often get stressed whenever they lose a
laptop or a mobile phone as this are the most essential devices they have and
are costly.
Naomi a third year student lives to tell the trauma that she
went through after she lost two phones in a semester. Naomi says that the
phones were stolen through the window and wonders how a thief could break the
window while she is in deep sleep in the night and then snatches the phone
under her pillow without her knowledge. She believes that the thieves might
have sprayed the room first with sleeping drugs making her unconscious before
they could break the window. She said that she heard nothing during that night
and to her astonishment, she had woken up in the morning only to realize that
the window was wide open and her phone was no more. She felt like crying to
death, but fear pricked her, the fear of her assailant killing her via the
window.
Patrick a 5th year student in the school of
engineering has a story to tell on his encounter with thieves in his room in
hostel L, he had kept his laptop under bed and rushed to take a shower. On
coming back, the door was open and everything in the room was turned upside
down. He was dump founded. How will he explain this to his father who had
sacrificed for him to have that precious laptop, he didn’t know whom to tell
the story. Security men could not help him since the laptop was gone in a broad
daylight. Christine also a psychology student is a victim of circumstance. Her
phone had been stolen through the window while it was on charging in her room,
KLG basement. She never saw the thief nor the phone when she walked in from
fetching water.
Could there be ghosts in Moi University who steal day and
night? Why is there no arrest on those thieves? Naomi leaves with fear whenever
she is in her room alone. She says at times she is awoken by scary dreams of
theft in the night.
The security men in Moi University can give their best in
ensuring that security is in order only if the students are able to report
cases of theft immediately. On the other hand, the thieves could be fellow
students who spy their friends and later apply a trick on them without their
knowledge thus proofing it difficult for the security men to cab insecutity.
They overlook the security issues and deal with petty security breaches. Wish them well
